welcome to the nick and matt show bringing the player interviews you want to hear and the hot topics you want to discuss streaming live on the foundation podcast youtube channel here's nick and matt give us the elevator like what is the what is the world ranking system yeah great question so um it's something that we've been wanting to do for a while um and it's something that has sort of been missing in pro disc golf for a while um so our goals were to develop a way to accurately rank the pros uh the best players in the sport in a way that really aligns incentives with what the pros are already trying to do which is uh win or at least place as well as possible at the biggest events the biggest events in the world the biggest stages so we considered a lot of different ways to do this some of the methods that are used for example in golf and a lot of other sports are sort of point-based methods you get points for maybe winning event or for beating a certain tier of player or something like that and you accumulate points by playing and doing well at these events person with the highest points is ranked the best or maybe you take an average and drop some events or something like that there are other methods out there though that are used for other games and other sports the one that we settled on and it's not exactly what we're doing but is it's called the elo method it was invented for chess and the essential idea behind it is each player maintains an internal rating not the pdga rating but something totally separate and as they play games as they play events their rating goes up or down depending on how they perform in those events so if they outperform expectations their rating goes up if they underperform their rating goes down and the amount that their rating goes up or down is proportional to how far they outperform or underperform expectations so if you go play a chess match against somebody who's way worse than you and you crush them then sure you get some points but barely any but if you have if you score a great upset against the best chess player in the world then your...
