In this episode of our tournament director training series, we'll be talking about waivers, an acknowledgement by the PDGA that a tournament is using a non-standard rule or practice and that it has been approved for this single event. Welcome back to TD School. One of the great things about participation in PDJ sanctioned events is that players know what to expect from the competitive experience. Sanctioned events follow the same official rules of disc golf competition manual and tour standards and tournament directors sign a sanction agreement acknowledging these standards. This guarantees that disc golf competition is played the same no matter where you tee off and putt out and that all rated rounds are comparable. But times change and sometimes a TD has an idea they'd like to try out in their event. In this case, it's important that the TD contact the event support team to present their idea for evaluation. The event support team will work with the TDs to ensure that any approved non-standard rule allows the layout to be rated and if not the event will be marked with an X designation and not be rated but still be sanctioned. >> Not every non-standard rule or policy a TD wishes to use can receive a waiver. Some requests will be denied. When events use non-standard rules without prior approval, they are at risk of having the rounds be unrated or the entire event being unsanctioned. Some examples of non-standard rules that under certain circumstances can receive a waiver are >> limiting a player's normal OB options as is common with many island green designs >> mandatories without a defined drop zone within 10 meters of the mandatory >> and reduced pro payout for approved competition endowment program charity events. Some examples of non-standard rules that cannot receive a waiver are >> the continued use of Island Green drop zone rules for throws from the drop zone >> ratings exceptions for division qualifications other than as provided by the competition manual section 2.03 03 exceptions, >> any youth safety rules found in competition manual section 1.13 or any rules found in competition manual section 3.03 on player misconduct. >> So, as a tournament director, how do you get a waiver? Send an email to the PDJ's event support team, that's events supportpj.com, with the description of the non-standard rule or practice you want to use...
