THE Buzz

f you've been browsing discgolf.buzz recently, you may have noticed something changing across the site. Some of our articles are beginning to feature unique, custom hero images instead of the placeholder artwork you've seen in the past.
That's not a coincidence.
It's the result of a custom AI-powered media production pipeline we've spent months building—and we're incredibly excited to finally share how it works.
The Challenge: Thousands of Stories, One Big Problem
Disc golf never slows down.
Every week brings tournament results, player announcements, equipment news, course openings, rankings, interviews, and community stories. At discgolf.buzz, our goal is to cover as much of the sport as possible, but that creates an interesting challenge.
Every article deserves a compelling hero image.
Traditionally, that means hiring photographers, licensing stock photography, or manually creating graphics for every story. That's expensive, time-consuming, and simply doesn't scale when you're publishing thousands of articles.
For a long time, many of our stories used placeholder images while we focused on getting the news out quickly. But we always knew we wanted something better.
Teaching AI What Disc Golf Looks Like
Rather than relying on stock photography or generic AI images, we decided to build our own solution.
At the heart of our current system is Stable Diffusion 1.5, paired with a custom-trained LoRA built specifically for disc golf.
If you've never heard of a LoRA before, think of it like teaching the AI a new specialty. We showed it hundreds of real disc golf photographs so it could learn what makes our sport unique—players in motion, discs in flight, baskets, wooded fairways, tournament settings, and the overall visual style that makes disc golf instantly recognizable.
Instead of asking a general-purpose AI to "guess" what disc golf looks like, we've taught it using real examples from the sport.
The result is artwork that feels much more authentic and tailored to the stories we're publishing.
An Automated Pipeline From Story to Hero Image
Building the model was only half the project.
We also built an automated production pipeline that handles the entire process behind the scenes.
Our system analyzes an article, generates a unique contextual hero image, uploads it directly into our content management system, and assigns it to the article automatically.
No manual editing.
No downloading and uploading files.
No one clicking through dozens of screens.
The process runs on its own, allowing us to spend more time covering the sport instead of managing media assets.
Right now, that pipeline is hard at work replacing the placeholder images on articles that are already live. As it works through our existing library, you'll start seeing more and more custom AI-generated hero images appear throughout the site.
Looking Ahead: FLUX Changes Everything
While we're thrilled with what we've accomplished using Stable Diffusion, we're already building the next generation of our pipeline.
Going forward, new articles will be powered by a custom LoRA trained on FLUX.1 Dev, one of the most impressive image generation models available today.
The jump in quality is remarkable.
FLUX produces significantly more realistic human anatomy, smoother athletic movement, better lighting, richer detail, and more natural-looking scenes. For a sport built around dynamic throwing form and beautiful outdoor courses, those improvements make a huge difference.
The early images coming out of our FLUX training have genuinely blown us away, and we can't wait to start using them on future stories.
Our Vision
Our goal is simple.
Every article on discgolf.buzz should have a unique hero image created specifically for its content.
Tournament coverage.
Player profiles.
Course reviews.
Equipment news.
Community stories.
Every article deserves visuals that feel just as original as the story itself.
We're excited about what AI makes possible—not because it replaces creativity, but because it helps us present the sport we love in new ways while letting our team focus on what matters most: delivering great disc golf journalism.
So the next time you're browsing discgolf.buzz, keep an eye on the imagery. You may notice older articles gradually receiving fresh, AI-generated hero images, while new stories will soon showcase the next generation of visuals powered by FLUX.
We're incredibly proud of what we've built, and we're only getting started.
The best is definitely yet to come.
