The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) has made a change of plans for the 2025 PDGA Champions Cup, one of its premier events. Initially set to return to the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC) in Appling, Georgia, the event will now be held at Swenson Park Disc Golf Course in Stockton, California, from May 1-4.

The decision to relocate the event was not taken lightly by the PDGA and its partners. Doug Bjerkaas, Executive Director for the PDGA, explained that the organization is committed to hosting an elite-level tournament on a course with challenging fairways and adequate spectator accommodations. However, due to ongoing renovations at the IDGC, it was deemed necessary to find a new venue.

To ensure the success of the event, Sean Jack and Shawn Mercy will serve as co-tournament directors and lead the Local Organizing Committee for the 2025 PDGA Champions Cup. Both individuals have extensive experience in organizing elite-level events, including their roles as Assistant Tournament Directors for the 2023 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships.

While some fans may be disappointed by the change of venue, Bjerkaas sees it as an opportunity to bring a major PDGA event to the west coast of the United States for the first time since the 2014 PDGA Pro Worlds in Oregon. This will also mark the first MPO/FPO Major held in California since the 2011 Pro Worlds.

California has previously hosted FPO PDGA Majors, most recently with the United States Women's Disc Golf Championship contested in Auburn, California, in 2021. The relocation of the PDGA Champions Cup to Swenson Park will provide a new and exciting experience for competitors and spectators alike.

The move to Swenson Park also sets the stage for potential future major events on the west coast. As the bidding process for all 2026 PDGA Majors opens on June 1, interested parties can submit their proposals to host these prestigious tournaments.
