The 2025 college season held the early promise of a deep and talented field of contenders in the D1 women's division. Before play kicked off, our staff went back and forth on whether the athletic and talented 2024 semi-finalist Vermont or a deep UBC team that was also returning its two brightest stars, Mika Kurahashi and Madison, should be number one. But it didn't take long for UBC to establish themselves as the division's favorite as they charged through both Santa Barbara Invite and Presday as undefeated champions. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, Tus was strong against both UNCC and Carlton at Queen City Tuneup to earn a tournament win and they added another first place finish at Stanford Invite to build up their resume. On the road in Washington, Carlton took down a tough Northwest Challenge Field. And UBC took their first loss of the season, an unceremonious defeat at the hands of a defensively minded Colorado quandry. During this regular season, the West Coast was a powerhouse, earning all but one of the 10 strength bids. The Southwest produced a deep group of teams with no clear favorite, but all seemingly capable of playing at the level required for bracket runs at nationals. Even as UC Santa Barbara rebounded from a less than stellar regular season to win the contested region, the stage is set for nationals with UBC and TUS at the head of the class. But the likes of Carlton and Colorado ready and able to thwart any predicted collision course. Plus, UNCC and Vermont are looking to extend their respective semi-final streaks, and the battle tested teams of the North and Southwest will not go down easy.
