An AI mishap. DGN keeps unveiling new events. Did you guys forget about match play? No worries, we got you covered. And not too much more this week in disc golf. What's going on all you disgenerates? It's Swiss cheese with the disc golf world. That YouTube channel that refuses to be put in a box and covers the sport their way and in a fraction of the time than the rest. You're watching this week in disc golf where I cover all things disc golf from the past week. On a relatively quiet off week with a split player pool across the nation, most of you might think I would lead out with matchplay event. But let's just start off with something that got actual views, albeit with plenty of negative comments. Gothro Disc Golf released their coverage of the 2024 USD DGC distance competition. It being months tardy wasn't the issue. It was the use of some off-putting bro AI commentary whose delivery felt more like a love on the spectrum date than a disc golf postp production. That's to say it was clunky, awkward at times with the delivery of nuggets of interesting information seemingly pulled out of nowhere whether you asked for it or not. The comment section was not kind as the AI usage was criticized heavily. So much so an apology was issued and what will be a new release with the AI removed altogether. Coverage of our sport is growing and with it a differing approach from what has been traditional to our sport for years now. Use of AI for some is controversial, but a technology that is commonplace in all other sports coverage. Shouldn't be a surprise it enters our sport either. That's despite many in the disc golf community constantly pushing back on new coverage styles or approach. Something that we here at the disc golf world certainly understand. Maybe the use of AI was a bit too much too soon for the community or just that bad. But I for one can't imagine Gothro expected this reaction as that comment section was brutal. Tough to experience after hours of an added and scripting for the AI to come off as lazy.
