Welcome to the Upshot, the weekly disc golf podcast about the latest in the disc golf world. Dismania Challenge coming up this weekend. This is formerly the Des Moines Challenge. So, we're in Iowa. Something about that Midwestern rolling hills farmland, I just can't get enough of. Feel like we're a down-to-earth set of people. Generally pretty nice. I've been all over the US. And the Midwestern hospitality is a true thing. You know, it's a small town world. Where everybody kind of knows each other and where we can raise our kids and go ride our bike across town to go play disc golf or go play tee ball or go play baseball or go chase a squirrel around the neighborhood. Whatever we want to do. We're all lifelong Iowans here and you know, we're not just doing it for our city or we're doing it for our state. So, I call it the People's Park cuz it's brought to you by the people. Doug Bylon, park director, has been incredibly generous in allowing myself and this crew of volunteers to come in. We'll have the barricades, you know, we'll have parking attendant, you know, so That was the question. They have to have a lanyard or have to have a credential. Players only. Staff. It's players, staff, uh vendors, volunteers, and media. Well, let me write this down. >> Yeah. So, it started with a crazy idea, you know, let's start there. In 2020, uh Titan had a fall tournament. What's up, everybody? Welcome to the 2021 Waterloo Open. We played a little four-person match out here during COVID. That kind of started like the blood flowing, I guess, for me as far as like, you know, what can we do here? Can we put on an event? And then from there, I went to Doug. Hello. He's like, long story short, something got canceled in Norway from COVID. And hey, we're going to have an Elite Series event in July. Okay, let's do it. Doug, of course, you know, didn't have a whole lot of knowledge of disc golf beyond just the course. But I told him the vision. The vision was we're going to have 1,500 people out here watching disc golf at once. And you know, Doug, he didn't bat an eye. Tell me where you want the fences at and then I will do...
