Putting Gateway Discs To The Test | Should They Be Relevant? // F9

welcome back to Bonanza disc golf into a new series on the channel which I'm super excited for because today we're at 65th infantry Park here in Orlando Florida which would have been my home 18 hole course if I lived where I did before I moved into the van but instead of just playing with our normal bag or even just doing a bag of bit here we're going to be doing a new thing we're going to be taking a look at a whole lineup of this from a company in a series called New Kid in the bag Gateway sent me out a lot of their discs they have way more that I don't have here but they send me out what should be a full enough lineup to go and play this course and see if we can shoot either nine down or a thousand rated whichever one is easier because nine down is still pretty tough over the course of the next two videos Frontline being this video Back Nine being the next one so that we can just get an idea of what good decision making on the course is as well as seeing if these discs are worth trying out hey coffee shop editor Anthony here I didn't quite explain this very well and I figured this out a little bit after the video but I was thinking about how to do giveaways or punishments for the new series if I don't reach my goal the way that's gonna work is there's gonna be three levels the first is that if I can't get my goal one disc is going to be given away if I can't get within three Strokes of my goal so in this case six down or better then we're gonna have to give two discs away and if I can't beat par then we're gonna have to get three discs away but the way the giveaways are gonna work here is that I'm going to give you the whole lineup of discs or at least my favorite ones from the lineup in a community poll at the end of the series if I don't win you guys will be able to vote on the disc that you won't give it away the top results will go into a bag and once that bag has five discs in it from this series I'll give it away to somebody likely over on the Instagram maybe over on YouTube if I can figure out how to do that but that's how it's gonna work let's get into what discs Gateway sent me out they sent me out an illusion a hemp blend prophecy a super glow I think that's actual disc maybe it's just the plastic but this is the only one I don't know the numbers of the journey a spear a magnet a wizard classic Gateway a devil Hawk and Noah 5S Signature Series Gateway element which you've already done a video on and I really like this mid-range and the blade which seems to be the only real overstable disc that we have in here maybe the prophecy maybe the super glow but I need to look up those numbers before we get on the course now to be completely honest with you guys I totally recorded an intro already but my microphone receiver wasn't up so I've already taken a look at which putter I think I'm gonna like to putt with the most which is going to be the wizard over the magnet the wizard has this little bead here that the magnet doesn't and normally I'm not a big beaded putter guy I don't have anything against them that's just not how I've put before but the plastic is a little bit stiffer than this plastic which is a little bit floppier but this is going to make this a really good straight approach putter so I'm excited to throw this inside of 150 feet maybe even on some turnover lines and have it just sit down where it hits but I just want to give some love to the smaller companies and see how they actually fare against the big guys because I'm sure that there are some hidden gems of molds like I've heard that devil Hawk is phenomenal so I'm super excited to throw that but the way that these Challenge videos are gonna work is I'm going to have to play the 18 holes front nine this video back in my next video however unlike bag of minutes I don't want to just kind of come into these courses relatively blind with the discs where I learned the discs along the way I want to actually give them a fair shot so on this first hole or whichever field that I'm next to whatever course I'm going to be playing at I'm going to actually give these all shots to just try to figure out the discs a little bit before I go out and throw them maybe only 10 or 15 minutes giving them each a couple throws and hopefully the 18 holes we're doing this one from the Longs I'm going through a form change so I'm not super excited about having to shoot nine down but I like the challenge and I'm really excited to see how these Gateway discs fare because I've heard so many good things about them just they still seem to only be like a oh they still seem to kind of be an under the radar company though so all right so I just realized a couple things in throwing those discs they all tend to fly close to their numbers which is good you can trust them enough but with anything when you're throwing newer discs even if it's this to like I've thrown you a couple times but I don't have a great relationship I always want to play a little bit safer always thinking about my misses which is why these are split into two videos so that we can get an idea not just of how the disks fly but also how to play with new discs hopefully I can be a good example of that the first hole is all the way up this Fairway and then slightly to the right so it could be a big forehand but that's interesting it says on the t-pad that it might be 400 feet plus okay it's saying about 380 which is what I thought it was I think you just has 380 something so just up and turning to the right it could be a forehand but I don't really trust my forehand the disc that I would throw to get there would probably be the illusion 12 5 negative 0.5 2.5 I found it flies very destroyer-like it's pretty shallow in my hand so I'm not sure if I'm gonna like that or not it kind of feels good it kind of feels like it rips out of my hands pretty well I think the disc for me nope it's probably the journey 11.56 negative two one it feels kind of like an 11 to 12 speed room 11.5 probably right sixth glad I'd say it's true and this is the one I think just hyzer flip turn it over a little bit we should be able to get a look for the two ideally because we need basically every other I'm trying not to say hey let me make sure that I get every other or I get four down or five down on the front nine because anything can happen I don't know if they're easier holes in the back or the front we're just going to do our best foreign oh those are trees I didn't quite trust that left enough I do want to see what that illusion forehand play would be see if oh wait this is the super glue what are the numbers on that I need to figure that out Spirit maybe yeah I'm pretty sure this is a spirit 12404 good to know okay that'll be my overstable driver I want to see what this illusion forehand does that comes out clean just 40 feet short all right we're just gonna go ahead and leave you guys up here I gotta find that desk I thought it got farther but it seemed like it would have pushed through but where the heck did this one go did it get caught in this tree oh it was really good actually holy cow also gonna move my mic so might not have as crispy audio but I need to make my chest not hurt let's see if this thing really is Magic in the putter just outside the circle no I thought I made that not enough Glide that would have been a good birdie to start with I don't think it's necessarily not a glidie putter but I mean the putters that I normally put with are probably some of the Gladius parties you camp out with I put with Piers I think I always just have to expect to put a little bit of extra juice on anything else that I put with until it proves me that it's equally as glidy so it's what it is it's a little nature appreciation moment hopefully we don't get eaten by sandhill cranes all right hole two here could be interesting just dead ahead of us I kind of want to try the devil Hawk but this is definitely more of an approach disc than a driving disc so I'm gonna treat it as such I'm not going to really use it maybe on some par fours I'm wondering honestly I think it might be the prophecy because I don't mind just throwing a big hyzer with a mid-range instead of just going straight up the gut says it's either 218 or 264. I'm guessing the 218 part of me just wants to hyzer flip this magnet because I don't know if we'll have a better opportunity especially because the wind isn't necessarily hurting us it's pushing us to the left so if I focus on keeping this on hyzer it should flip up the big thing is we just don't want it to Glide in there which is why I like the mid-range because it it'll get to the ground a little bit fast I don't know I think we're going to try the magnet I'm going to throw the prophecy as a second just to continue learning these discs a little bit the one thing about this disc is this plastic the L plastic I don't know what it is it's very I don't like these type of plastics but if it hits anywhere it should sit and this feels in the hand it feels kind of like a bigger inner core if you've ever thrown an inner core it kind of feels like this Rim is a little bit bigger so maybe closer to three speed should be simple hyzer flip biggest thing is since this is a flip your disc it should keep us more safe than going in the water foreign I like my new forms so much I like having a little bit more hyzer it feels so much more consistent let's freaking go dude let's go so I think I just had an unfortunate realization I think that was the short pad so I think I'm gonna have to go play The Long pad really good birdie I'm just gonna set you up as a catch Cam and go birdie from the long pad just so there's no confusion okay I'm gonna take the element and the prophecy with me all right you guys scare the crap out of me you're like as tall as me chill out oh yeah this is saying 260 from here I think the element's a little straighter I think that's what I prefer right now good easy putts on to three we'll make sure we play for the Longs this is also the time that normally and I almost said it to you guys I would be like oh we could be two down if we made that first putt it's like that is not helpful language to have oh I could be too down it's like okay but I'm one like what does that do for me literally nothing instead I could just think hey I'm on down let's get the next birdie just think on the next thing instead of oh we could be two down and be oh so much closer to winning our challenge that doesn't matter that doesn't do anything for me now so that's something I need to tell myself even in tournaments I don't think about what you could have done just think about the next shot and that next shot is pretty beastly it's all the way back there right behind there you can probably see the yellow and the white flag and this is where things get to start to be a little tricky for me because this shot I think is 440 feet which like on the best day I do have honestly with my new form I really struggle a little bit more I just have to focus more on Flex shots and so because of that I'm not going to go with like this crazy silver stable this is pretty long though yeah so I'm not gonna go with whatever this one is I forgot already Spirit I'm not gonna go with the spirit I think I'm gonna go with the illusion the 11 5 negative 0.5 2.5 little pop top this is in their Platinum plastic it feels a little bit more rubbery than the hyper Diamond plastic which is most of what I've been throwing the element was metal flake I think just throwing it flat between these two trees it should turn a bit the big thing is just not letting it turn over too much and focusing on like I'm gonna have to throw this closer to full power and focus on keeping my good form instead of getting my old bad habits of rotating backwards and then ripping over instead just keep it up this is gonna be interesting yeah Anthony let's go that might be a long cut probably a little baby hyzer probably as much hyzer as before when I said oh I'm throwing this with hyzer and then didn't actually because I didn't know how to throw hyzer and now everything's coming out on Heiser and so now it's probably actually a baby hyzer maybe a little stand up but that just went super straight for I don't know how many feet maybe 360 380. well I arranged this to right at 370 so if you're wondering how much distance I'm losing compared to where I used to be it's a lot but it's gonna be good for the long term dang it I'm between Wizard and devil Hawk I kind of better than any throw in here could be pretty spectacular but this is still what I feel is pretty confident part of range oh no it's also not as flippy as my peers good to know not bad all right let's make it come back here real fast all right hole four looks like it's 341 feet dead ahead of us this could be just a big forehand I think to get us inside the circle but there is man it doesn't say anything is OB so I feel gracious for that I'm gonna play all the pads as a river which I think is a little generous to myself I'm gonna obviously try to not go over them because that's a bad shot but we're gonna play him as a river instead of as straight up OB because this isn't a tournament and the t-pads don't say that and normally the t-pads do so I could force over a mid to get there or maybe Heiser flip a fairway we do have a blade which is 9503 so probably acts like my B didn't Fountain does but we also have the spear here nine six negative two one which I didn't get the best throws with but it seems like a baby Journey there is an ice cream truck that looks very sketchy but when do they not I'm not confident about this shot but I have to trust the hyzer flip to get there too high okay not enough turn which is fine that's a long putt that makes it's true to its numbers I just thought that it could be a lot flippier and I didn't want to risk going over that sidewalk all right wizard I need you to do your magic for me okay buddy oh I think I think there's a magic not a magnet my bad it just has mag on it and that's the first part that came to mind just a little too far luckily since we're playing the river it'll be or we're barely safe I knew I was gonna miss that in my head I don't back to even it's all right we can get our nine that sucks because that's just a bad putting performance it's hard too because like there are differences in Putters from Circle two and so since I'm so used to my own Putters just being in the circle two butts just feels a little different like I felt like both those were good but alrighty whole five here it's right around 200 feet just straight there I think this is the time for the devil Hawk to shine I think we're gonna try just a backhand hard shot with the devil Hawk leave it out right let it come back towards the basket because it is slightly downhill probably place closer to 170 ish should be an easy birdie such an interesting disc kind of feels like an overstable Burg very weird back to one down just because we got the bogey doesn't mean we still can't get nine down that's always one of the other mental struggles that I have is if I get a bogey I automatically like lose my challenge in my mind you know instead of just being like hey it's okay it's just a bogey like it's really helped to watch a lot more Pro coverage and see them get bogeys and still shoot like 12 sounds it's like okay all right here's a good hole to just let them fly I think we got about 392 feet we're gonna throw the journey that slightly under stable distance driver slight eyes are flipped straight there honestly maybe a little flatter and higher because we do have a Tailwind so it's got to stable it out a little bit should be able to get a putt though foreign yeah baby get out there shorty hey I'm not throwing far right now okay I'm like outside the circle if that was full Flight 340 feet I'm gonna be pretty disappointed in myself honestly 360. oh my gosh we can make one okay now I've missed this in all the ways I can now I should be able to put while with it come on dude just try not to kill myself trying to have the right form but it's killing me in my heart because I'm throwing 60 feet shorter than I normally am all right hole seven I think I saw it way up to the right which would make it a par four yes okay good 560 foot Par Four oh I haven't thrown the blade yet just out the middle here and then again so probably big forehand baby forehand is probably how to play this I think big forehand I am just gonna go illusion because I don't want to get it a little straighter than what the spirit would be able to do get through oh so lucky that's so inside that's a good shot though it's a really good shot well I was a little worried about hitting that tree and then of course I did because I didn't not think about it all right straight ahead of us there is the basket should be relatively simple there's a lot of gnats here probably just a mid-range maybe it's prophecy I think elements is just a nice disc I like using that a lot but I think we're gonna try to go through prophecy it could just be a simple forehand too but there's a little a few more trees to deal with it seems maybe a little far for that I don't know the actual distance oh glad I did that 277. all right we're actually going to do a blade then because it kind of likes to push a little bit more in hyzer instead of just like go straight so I think if we throw it straight to the right it should kind of dump right in there right around the 300 foot mark a lot more dump than Glide I also thought that it kind of flipped up a little bit I was I didn't think I was going to flip up I thought it was going to ride the hyzer that was very surprising to me honestly I thought this was a lot farther than it was man I don't something about not putting with your own Putters especially I think because this has a bead it's a little bit deeper feeling in my hands that's really frustrating to take that part man that's not a hard pot I think we're still one down that's not bad and we have 10 holes left we can still make it happen back nine might need to readjust our expectations a little bit but I think we can still do something pretty significant all right looks like this might be an eagle over Par Four or there yeah 470 foot part four straight out the gut Journey again yeah that's good that's really solid right now by a bunch of people's houses and there's a guy she's like 25 feet away from me in his yard that's why I didn't talk very much there I'm a little disappointed but I don't know why like obviously it'd be cool to shoot like these crazy hot rounds with these new discs but you still have to learn the discs so I have to really be on in all facets and like I'm not playing a bad round by any stretch like I've had a putt every single hole I've just missed a lot of those putts I don't use beaded Putters and I didn't like the feel of the magic honestly it's a little too floppy that shot with the journey really good I'm also not throwing as far as I want like there's a lot of reasons why this isn't going as well as it potentially could be but I think I'm still learning a lot about these discs and there are definitely some good ones like especially that devil Hawk I'm very interested in that thing I like it a lot and it might even give us a throw in chance here all right so we can go for that little throne with a double Hawk I just don't want it to roll down the hill could also go for a backhand with the magic which will sit a little bit better I think that's probably the safer throw and play we parked it for a birdie don't do it okay I kind of like that for throwings actually pretty simple nice I don't know if I want to try to put with this I just really don't like how floppy it is I think as a putter though I prefer the feel of it to the wizard I just can't deal with how floppy it is because the beat on the wizard just makes it fit a little bigger than I think and so my releases that are normally a little straighter come out a little more hyzer because it just sticks on my finger a little longer but obviously a lot of people have fun with the Wizards I just don't happen to be one of those people right now on the whole nine last hole of the back nine let's let's get three down three down is respectable especially when I had the opportunity to go nine for nine if I made all my putts which is not bad at all let me just make all my pots make a couple better throws everything I think was in circle two no hole three was Circle three but still gave it a little bid so there's opportunities of opportunities everywhere all right hole nine looks like an interesting way to end it you're pointed up because that's where we gotta go we are going basically straight to the left there honestly I think we're probably gonna go wizard just on a decent bit of hyzer we're gonna Glide down there because we haven't thrown the wizard yet and I think at that point we'll throw in all those discs on the front nine which is pretty solid wasn't necessarily the point but I like it okay it's range in 220 which I think is enough to just get a Heiser there ideally probably I should be throwing an element or prophecy but I think we can get the wizard there and I haven't thrown it yet just putt with it so let's give it a shot that should do I think it's probably about 20 short I was gonna dunk it for a second but that should definitely play alrighty nice little inside the circle putt to end it okay glad I put the map oh yeah I think honestly I prefer the magic I don't prefer the plastic but it did flop over the edge so maybe it wasn't as floppy it wouldn't have done it three down on the front nine not bad it means we only need six to reach our initial goal we like setting
