USWDGC 2022: Tight Competition and Record-Breaking Field Descend Upon Madison

The sun was shining brightly over Madison, Wisconsin, as the 2022 United States Women's Disc Golf Championship got underway, featuring a record-breaking field of 318 competitors. The atmosphere was electric, with hugs, laughter, and nerves palpable among the players.

At the heart of this excitement is Virginia Polkinghorne, who has been making waves in the women's division. As one of the youngest competitors at just 13 years old, Polkinghorne is a rising star on the disc golf scene. Her impressive performance in the Advanced division after the first round was an early indicator that she's ready to take on the best.

Polkinghorne's mother, Debbie, who is competing in the FA50 category, is also making waves, currently sitting in fourth place. When asked about her daughter's progress, Polkinghorne shared, "Seeing how I'm playing these courses compared to back then is really cool... Being around so many women and being in such a large field of women is amazing to see."

The competition is fierce, with tight margins separating the top players. In the FPO category, Eveliina Salonen has taken an early lead, firing off a bogey-free round that earned her a rating of 1003. Just one stroke back are Alexis Kerman and Ashley Pickett, along with Emily Yale.

The course itself is proving to be a challenging test for even the most skilled players, with swirling winds making it difficult to birdie at every opportunity. However, Salonen's impressive performance suggests that she may be up to the task.

Not all divisions are as closely contested, though. In the FA40 field, Kim Keen leads Linda Ray by just one stroke, while in FP60, Pam Reineke has jumped out to a five-stroke lead. It's clear that this year's USWDGC will be an event to remember, with record-breaking attendance and high-level competition from start to finish.

As the tournament continues, fans can expect plenty of exciting moments, with close finishes and surprises waiting just around the corner. Stay tuned for more updates on the action unfolding at Madison's USWDGC 2022!
