Toboggan Course Tests World's Top Players in Round One of Great Lakes Open

The Toboggan DGC in Milford, Michigan, is known for its challenging fairways and thick Midwestern undergrowth. While it may be scoreable for the world's top players, the course can still catch even the best off guard. This was evident on day one of the 2020 Discraft Great Lakes Open, as several top-ranked players struggled to navigate the course.
PDGA Tour newcomer Brodie Smith, who is competing alongside his teammate and disc golf mentor Paul McBeth, had a respectable round despite a few mishaps. Smith managed to stay in contention for much of the day but ultimately finished tied-54th with a 992-rated two-under par score.
McBeth, on the other hand, appeared frustrated at times as he struggled to find his rhythm through much of the opening round. However, he was able to put together a string of five straight birdies before backtracking on the final hole with a bogey. McBeth finished tied-15th with a 1033-rated seven-under par score.
Calvin Heimburg cruised to a dominant performance, finishing round one with an impressive 1082-rated 13-under par score and taking a one-stroke lead heading into day two. "I feel good," Heimburg said in a post-round interview. "If I can keep the tee shots in the fairways like I did today, I have no doubt that I'll score well."
Rounding out the top of the leaderboard were last year's runner-up Kevin Jones and Eagle McMahon, both sitting two strokes back of Heimburg at 11-under par. Ricky Wysocki also had a solid round but missed an opportunity to close out his score with a birdie on the final hole.
On the Women's side, five-time PDGA World Champion Paige Pierce dominated the field, finishing with a 985-rated five-under par score and a two-stroke cushion heading into day two. "I left a lot out there," Pierce said in an interview. "I ended the front nine and the back nine with bogeys – a couple of blemishes that weren't necessary."
Former PDGA World Champion Catrina Allen also had a good-but-not-great day, struggling with her putting but still managing to find herself near the top of the field thanks to her scramble rate and a few big putts.
The second round gets underway today at 2pm ET, live on the Disc Golf Network. Fans can catch all the action and follow scores and updates on the 2020 DGLO Event Page.
