Swedish Disc Golf Takes Center Stage with New Major Tournament
Date Published
The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) has officially recognized the European Masters as a major disc golf tournament, marking a significant milestone for the sport in Europe. Scheduled to take place at the esteemed Järva Disc Golf Park in Sweden from July 17th-21st, this new event is set to build on the legacy of the Stockholm Disc Golf Open (SDGO), which has been running consecutively since its inception.
According to Jussi Meresmaa, Chairman of the organizing committee, being entrusted with continuing SDGO's long-standing tradition is a tremendous honor. The European Masters aims to elevate this tournament to new heights by bringing in expert promotional expertise and developing it into an even more compelling experience for competitors and spectators alike. With the world-class Järva Disc Golf Park as its venue, organizers are confident that the event will draw top talent from across the globe.
Notably, the European Masters will feature a streamlined format with only two divisions: Open (MPO) and Open Women (FPO). The field is limited to 144 players, with an emphasis on attracting high-caliber competitors. A substantial prize purse of SEK 280,000 ($40,000+ USD) has been allocated for the tournament.
The Järva Disc Golf Park itself holds a special place in disc golf history as Europe's first pay-to-play course, established in 1996. Course owner Mats Löf will be instrumental in designing the tournament layout for the European Masters, leveraging his expertise gained from creating the acclaimed SDGO 2012 course design.
Player registration for the European Masters is set to open on February 5th, with organizers anticipating a full field of 144 participants. The registration process will unfold in two phases based on PDGA ratings. Top-ranked MPO players (rated 975 or higher) and FPO players (rated 925 or higher) will secure their spots in the first phase, while remaining players can register for subsequent rounds.
As the host organization, Innova Champion is committed to delivering an exceptional experience for competitors and spectators alike.
