Reviving Disc Golf: A Workshop for Teachers in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Date Published

In 2011, we hosted an innovative workshop in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. This unique event was made possible thanks to a grant from the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). The workshop aimed to introduce thirty physical education teachers from across North Carolina to the numerous benefits of disc golf, including its potential for promoting health, physical fitness, and environmental stewardship.

The workshop took place at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, a 1200-acre woodland paradise that boasts stunning mountain streams, wildflowers, ridges, valleys, and breathtaking views. The James Nichols-designed disc golf course on campus provided an ideal setting for teachers to practice their skills and challenge themselves. Despite some participants being unfamiliar with the sport, their eagerness and good-natured competitiveness made for a delightful atmosphere.

Dr. Chris "CTP" Tuten, renowned for his exceptional putting skills and mid-range anhyzers, captivated the group with his impressive techniques. Meanwhile, participants bombarded him with questions about throwing basics, rules, and equipment, showcasing their enthusiasm for learning. The joyful laughter and picturesque setting set the tone for a truly unforgettable afternoon.

The feedback from teachers was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the workshop as one of the best they had ever attended. Some even asked if they could look forward to similar events in the future. We received an abundance of hugs – as well as handshakes – indicating that participants genuinely cherished their experience.

Recognizing the importance of innovative activities for physical education classes, we realized that disc golf was poised to become a hit among teachers. This workshop offered a unique opportunity for educators to learn the fundamentals necessary to teach disc golf effectively in an ideal setting. By educating young people about this exciting sport, we believed that its popularity would continue to grow.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the PDGA and David Shope from Innova/EDGE for their invaluable support in making this workshop a success.
