As I approach my 75th birthday, I've come to realize that life is full of unexpected twists and turns. For me, one of these turning points was a chance encounter with my grandson Eagle at the Wintertime Open tournament in 2019. As I watched him effortlessly throw twice as far as I could, I knew I had to understand what made his technique so effective.

This experience sparked a new chapter in my disc golf journey. I began studying videos of top throwers, including Eagle and others like Simon, Paige, Ezra, and Ricky. With the help of my friend Doug, we analyzed my throwing mechanics and identified several areas that needed improvement. One key takeaway was that I was doing almost everything wrong – a daunting realization, but also a liberating one.

Armed with this new knowledge, I set out to rebuild my throwing technique from scratch. I started by researching online advice, trying various tips and techniques, and experimenting with different discs. But it wasn't until I began practicing regularly in a nearby field that I started to see real progress. With each passing day, I felt myself becoming more comfortable and confident in my throws.

One of the most significant breakthroughs came when I realized the importance of grip pressure, rotation, and follow-through. I watched videos of top throwers, including Captain Snap Michael and Dave Dunipace, who demonstrated the key elements of a successful disc release. Slowly but surely, my throws began to take shape, and I started experiencing that magical feeling of seeing my discs fly farther and straighter than ever before.

As I continued on this journey, I discovered that games were the true secret to enjoying disc golf. Whether it's ultimate, freestyle, ddc, or any other format, playing with friends makes the experience so much more enjoyable. And now, after months of throwing, I'm finally able to create the flights I envision – a truly exhilarating feeling.

My newfound passion has also inspired me to try my hand at golf shots again, something I hadn't done in over a year. With the help of my friends Dan Mangone and others, I've rediscovered the joy of playing disc golf on a challenging course. And as I reach holes that I never could in the past, I'm filled with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

In the end, it's not about achieving perfection or mastering every shot; it's about enjoying the process of improvement and sharing that journey with others. As I look to the future, I know that I'll continue to work on my technique, but for now, I'm just happy to be throwing my life away – in the best possible way.
