Ladies Shine Bright in Sweltering Conditions at US Women's Disc Golf Championships
Date Published

The heat was on at Harmon Hills just outside of Johnson City, Tennessee, as the ladies competed in back-to-back four and a half hour rounds for the 2017 United States Women's Disc Golf Championships presented by Prodigy Disc. Despite the sweltering conditions, these women showed no signs of fatigue, having plenty of fun in the sun instead.
The day began with Catrina Allen and Lisa Fajkus tied at the top of the leaderboard, three strokes ahead of a four-way tie for third place. Paige Pierce and Stephanie Vincent joined Catrina and Lisa on the lead card, but only Catrina would remain by the end of the round.
Catrina's round started off with a bogey on hole one, but she quickly got back on track with an impressive run of pars and occasional birdies. Her only other bogey came on the 17th hole after a long wait, but a final birdie on the 18th put her three strokes ahead of Lisa at the end of the day.
As the players took a quick lunch break and replenished their fluids, a gentle breeze rolled in to help keep them cool. The round seemed to be finishing much faster than it had earlier in the day, with all participants showing signs of energy and enthusiasm.
The front nine saw Sarah Hokom making a strong move from the chase card, playing bogey-free with two birdies and catching up with Lisa for second place. Val Jenkins also made significant strides, playing three under par on the front nine (31) and jumping up in the rankings.
However, Catrina showed no signs of slowing down, finishing the front nine bogey-free with three birdies and increasing her lead to five strokes. Just when it seemed like she would pull away even further, Sarah Hokom went on a tear, racking up four back-nine birdies. But unfortunately for her, Catrina's opponents were not so fortunate - Paige Pierce was also making a move, and was now just one stroke off the leaders.
The turning point came on hole 17, where a double bogey from Sarah allowed Paige to take the lead with a birdie. With another birdie on the final hole, Paige finished the day six under par (61) to emerge as the leader. She is now one ahead of Catrina after starting the round four back, and will face off against her in the final round at Pine Oaks.
Pine Oaks is a unique hybrid course designed on the front nine of the Pine Oaks Golf Course near downtown Johnson City. The course features steep elevation changes and large trees lining the fairways, making it a challenging but beautiful course for either disc golf or ball golf enthusiasts.
The final round will begin sharp at 9:00 am on Sunday morning, so be sure to check pdgalive.com for live scores, updates, pictures, and videos. Don't forget to subscribe to Prodigy Disc (YouTube) and The Disc Golf Guy (YouTube) for exclusive content!
