Joe Chargualaf, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), has hit the ground running in his new role. With over 21 years of experience in the United States Air Force under his belt, Chargualaf brings a unique blend of discipline and enthusiasm to the position.
In just over a month on the job, Chargualaf has already made significant contributions to the PDGA team. Coming from a background that includes senior leadership roles within the USAF Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department, as well as overseeing Air Force Sports Programs operations, he is well-equipped to tackle the challenges facing the rapidly growing sport of disc golf.
Chargualaf's arrival coincided with the 2017 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, also known as Pro Worlds. This prestigious event provided an ideal opportunity for him to get a firsthand look at the inner workings of the PDGA and its staff. "I thought it was awesome to be able to step in right at the time of Pro Worlds," Chargualaf said. "From a planning perspective, having it at the IDGC gave me an opportunity to see what the TDs deal with when planning for a PDGA Major."
Zach Shafer, IDGC Manager and Pro Worlds Tournament Director, praised Chargualaf's efforts, stating that he has been a "massive help" to the PDGA staff. "We're lucky to have him on board, and happy his transition has been so smooth," Shafer added.
Chargualaf's ability to connect with people from all walks of disc golf life is another key asset. He spends hours talking to Board members, volunteers, and players at the IDGC, making sure everyone feels welcome and valued. "Stepping into Pro Worlds was kind of an advantage for me," Chargualaf explained. "With everybody coming to town, it gave me a chance to meet a lot of people I've wanted to in just a couple of days."
A long-time disc golf enthusiast, Chargualaf has been playing the sport since 1991 and joined the PDGA in 1999 as member #15615. He has experience as a Tournament Director, volunteer, course designer, and installer of courses. As Executive Director, Chargualaf is committed to growing the sport globally and sharing its benefits with everyone.
The PDGA team is thrilled to have Chargualaf at the helm, and his impact on the organization will be felt for years to come. As he settles into his new role, Chargualaf's enthusiasm and dedication are setting a high standard for future growth and development of disc golf as a whole.
