Golfers Let Loose on the Course After Shuffle Day

Date Published

The world of professional disc golf can be a high-stakes game, but even the most seasoned players know how to have fun. On the day after shuffle, when the competition has just begun, golfers often let their guard down and reveal their true personalities on the course.

I spent my time at Ellison watching the Advanced Grandmasters as they navigated hole 4, a prime location for observing player interactions and witnessing some impressive action shots. By staying put at one hole, I was able to capture candid moments with several players and overhear their conversations.

One of the first golfers to pass through shared his secrets for staying healthy on tour: regular chiropractic visits had left him feeling great despite a history of back and shoulder operations. The topic of health continued as another player joked about how to make one's chest appear larger – simply stick out your rear end!

Of course, not all golfers were having the same level of fun. One player responded to a question about his round with a dry "Good. I'm still breathing." Another Advanced Grandmaster reflected on why he wasn't leading the pack, while a silver-haired golfer quipped that he was simply dyeing his hair gray.

I met Carl Cubbege (NJ), who had already aced hole 6 before the round even started – hopefully he repeated that feat during competition. Later in the day, I spoke with Patrick Harris (VT) about his unique tradition of collecting signatures on a special disc from each of his cards. He also shared a touching story about mixing his dog's ashes into the teepad on hole 15.

The course was also home to some impressive – and showy – shots. Someone managed to bank their putt off the silo and into the basket on hole 17, earning cheers from nearby players.

As I wrapped up my time at Ellison, I received heartwarming thanks from several players for helping make the AM Worlds a great experience. It's moments like these that remind us why this tournament is truly special.
