As the clock ticks down to the 2022 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championship, the city of Emporia, Kansas is in high gear to prepare for the biggest event in disc golf history. According to Tournament Director Doug Bjerkaas, the team is feeling a mix of excitement and responsibility as they work tirelessly to ensure that everything is perfect for the championship.
"We're ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring the best disc golfers in the world to Emporia," Bjerkaas said. "This World Championship is likely going to be the biggest event in the sport up until this point, and we know that we've got a big task ahead of us."
The preparation for the championship has been ongoing since December when members of the PDGA Operations and Logistics team visited Emporia for a routine site visit. The focus of these visits is on the courses where the action will take place and champions will be crowned.
This year, two courses will be in play: the Emporia Country Club (ECC) and the new Supreme 18 at Jones Park. The ECC course has undergone some tweaks, including the addition of a new hole 10 with a wooded tunnel shot. Bjerkaas believes that this change will provide another type of shot that players will have to hit.
The Jones Park course has been completely redesigned after feedback from players and spectators during the 2021 Dynamic Discs Open (DDO). Course designer Eric McCabe was tasked with creating a fresh layout using the entirety of Jones Park. The new course, Supreme 18, features holes with water carries, tight greens, and challenging elevation changes.
"It's going to be a tough course," Bjerkaas said. "We're confident that it will challenge even the top professionals in our sport."
The team is also working on the finer details of the event, including field events, practice areas, parking plans, spectator plans, security plans, and volunteer coordination. Bjerkaas acknowledged that the devil is always in the details, but he's confident that they'll get everything right.
"We're not taking this lightly," he said. "We know we've got a big responsibility to put on an event that people will be talking about for years to come."
The 2022 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championship is set to take place from August 30th through September 3rd in Emporia, Kansas. With just over eight months to go, the team is eager to put their hard work and preparation to the test.
