From Starter Pack to Championship Rounds: Britt Sawyer's Disc Golf Journey
Date Published

Britt Sawyer's introduction to disc golf was nothing short of serendipity. A friend invited her to try out a disc golf course with a starter pack, and what began as a casual interest quickly evolved into an all-consuming passion.
"I met some amazing ladies down in Boulder who encouraged me to join their league," Sawyer recalled after completing her opening round at the National Amateur Disc Golf Tour Championship in Austin. "They were incredibly supportive and helped me discover my potential."
Within months of joining the league, Sawyer found herself competing in tournaments, initially for fun but soon with a growing sense of competitiveness. Since then, she has participated in 29 events across Colorado, accumulating an impressive 22 wins – including several NADGT qualifiers that earned her a spot among the top 1,268 competitors at the Austin tournament.
"I love playing in tournaments because it's where I get to meet and play alongside other women," Sawyer emphasized. "The opportunity to see how we stack up against each other is exhilarating, especially with talented players from across the country."
Sawyer got off to a strong start on Thursday, battling challenging winds at the hill country course at Flat Creek Estate. Although she finished with the second-highest score of the day, she was thrilled to experience the unique challenges of playing in the Texas terrain.
"I'm from Colorado, so we usually play more open courses," Sawyer explained. "It was fantastic to try my luck with shaping shots and hitting lines on this course."
As the competition continues at 12 courses throughout Austin, Sawyer finds herself neck-and-neck with reigning FJ15 PDGA World Champion Aria Castruita, who holds a one-stroke lead over Sawyer. Lydia Lyons of Illinois and Madison Parrott of local Georgetown round out the top contenders.
Meanwhile, in the MPO division, a tight five-way tie at the top after Thursday's opening round sets the stage for an intense competition. The action will continue on Friday before live broadcasts on the Disc Golf Network begin on Saturday, culminating in the MPO and FPO finals on Sunday.
