Estonian disc golfer Kristin Tattar has made history by claiming the US Women's Disc Golf Championship title, breaking the 21-year dominance of American players. The 25-year-old, who had only five years of experience competing in PDGA events at the time, proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with on the course.
Tattar first gained recognition among the American disc golf fanbase in 2018 when she finished eighth at the Pro Worlds and second at the Delaware Disc Golf Challenge. Her impressive performances continued throughout 2019, where she claimed top-10 finishes at Pro Worlds and back-to-back second-place finishes at two of the Disc Golf Pro Tour's premier events.
The competition for the USWDGC title was fierce, with Tattar facing off against Paige Pierce in a thrilling finale. The duo battled it out through three rounds, with Tattar ultimately emerging victorious after a nail-biting finish on the final day. Tattar shot a sizzling 6-under par 57 to claim the title, with Rebecca Cox and Hannah Leatherman also shooting impressive scores.
When asked about her victory, Tattar expressed her gratitude to her fans back home in Estonia, who had helped fund her trip to the tournament. She also credited her success to her experience competing against top-level players from around the world, including European opponents Henna Blomroos and Eveliina Salonen.
Tattar's win is a testament to the growing talent and competitiveness of disc golfers from outside the United States. The Estonian player hopes that her achievement will inspire more European players to take on the challenge of competing against top American teams.
In other news, Elaine King made history by becoming the first Masters Women 40+ competitor to sweep all three PDGA Majors in a single year. Her victory at the USWDGC capped off an impressive season for the veteran player.
The 2020 USWDGC will take place in Placer Valley, California, and promises to be an exciting event with many of the world's top disc golfers set to compete.
