Disc Golf's Elite Gather: Proposals for 2018 PDGA Majors Now Open
Date Published
The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is seeking proposals from qualified hosts to stage the 2018 PDGA Major events, marking a significant shift in the organization's approach to hosting these elite competitions. The newly restructured format aims to cater to the growing demand for participation in disc golf's premier World Championships.
Under the revised model, the Pro Masters Worlds event will offer an expanded field of professional age-restricted members, while the Professional World Championships will become a standalone, elite-level tournament. This separation allows for more opportunities for top players to compete, as well as guaranteeing registration spots for high-level competitors. The PDGA hopes this format will attract the best talent from around the world.
According to Brian Graham, PDGA Executive Director, "The new World Championship models reflect our sport's rapid growth and increasing popularity. With an exponential increase in members vying for a World title, we're excited to accommodate more participants while creating a true elite-level Open World Championship."
To host these high-profile events, the PDGA requires experienced organizations with a proven track record of running large-scale disc golf tournaments. National Championships must be held within the United States, but international bids are welcome for other events. The selection process involves careful review by the PDGA staff and Board of Directors, considering factors such as event planning experience, facility quality, course proximity, and more.
Organizations interested in hosting these prestigious competitions can find detailed bid packages on the PDGA Major Events page. Proposals must be submitted by October 31, 2016, allowing selected hosts ample time to prepare for a world-class experience.
The PDGA encourages experienced disc golf clubs, nonprofit businesses, and community sports commissions to submit their bids and join the elite ranks of disc golf's premier events.
