Disc Golf's Brightest Stars Converge in Arizona for NGT National Championship
Date Published
The city of Fountain Hills, Arizona, will once again play host to one of the most prestigious events in amateur disc golf – the Next Generation Tour National Championship (NGT). This year's tournament promises to be just as exciting as last year's, with a field of 80 top-notch players vying for a prize that's sure to get their hearts racing: a brand new 2018 Jeep Renegade.
After months of qualifier events across the country and in Europe, the competition has narrowed down to its final stage. From Friday through Sunday, the remaining players will face off in a series of challenging rounds, with only the top performers advancing to the quarterfinals on Sunday morning. The stakes are high, as the last 16 competitors will be whittled down to just five – those who will have a shot at winning the coveted Jeep and claiming their place among the sport's elite.
Among the favorites vying for victory is Indiana's Andrew Cornwell, the third-highest rated player in the competition with a rating of 978. A seasoned pro with an impressive track record, Cornwell has already competed in over 30 PDGA-sanctioned events this year, including several high-stakes tournaments like Am Worlds and USADGC. Despite being one of the top contenders, he's not resting on his laurels – having opted to retain his amateur status rather than accept monetary winnings from previous victories.
The other player to watch is Silas Schultz, a 15-year-old prodigy with an impressive rating of 974. A repeat participant in the NGT National Championship, Schultz has already made a name for himself by earning top finishes at USADGC and Junior Worlds. His experience and skill will undoubtedly make him a force to be reckoned with on the course.
The competition is set to kick off bright and early Friday morning at 7:10 a.m. MST, with players facing off in two rounds of challenging play. The pressure will only intensify as the event progresses, with the quarterfinals and finals broadcast live on YouTube for all to see. As the drama unfolds, one thing is certain – only the strongest will emerge victorious, claiming the coveted Jeep Renegade and cementing their place among the sport's top stars.
