Disc Golf Pro Tour Expands to Europe with Norway's PCS Sula Open
Date Published

For years, European disc golf enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for the opportunity to share their passion with the rest of the world. That wait is finally over as the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) has announced its first-ever international event: the PCS Sula Open in Norway.
Scheduled to take place from July 7-10, 2021, this historic event will bring together top players from around the globe to compete on one of Europe's most breathtaking courses. The PCS Sula Open, which combines the established PCS and Sula Open events, has been a staple of European disc golf for years, with a reputation for delivering exciting competition and an unforgettable experience.
The decision to bring the DGPT to Norway was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association), PDGA Europe, and the Euro Tour. According to Matej Verl, PDGA Europe Tour Manager, this marks a significant step towards international recognition for European disc golf.
"It's a huge step forward for European disc golf," Verl said. "The United States audience will get to see our beautiful courses and talented players in action, which is going to be an exciting experience for everyone involved."
Jeff Spring, DGPT CEO and Director, has been eyeing an international event since taking on his role. After a conversation with PDGA Operations Director Mike Downes, the pieces fell into place.
"We were looking for the right circumstances, and this opportunity presented itself," Spring explained. "We're thrilled to partner with PDGA Europe and bring our tour to Norway."
One of the standout features of this event is its unique location. Situated on the western coast of Norway, the PCS Sula Open will offer breathtaking views of the fjords and surrounding mountains.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for players and spectators alike," said Gregg Barsby, who won the 2018 Sula Open. "The scenery is stunning, and the community is incredibly welcoming."
Barsby, who has been traveling to Europe every year since his first trip in 2014, praised the Norwegian disc golf scene.
"They're hungry over there for disc golf, and it shows," he said. "There are kids from Norway, Finland, Estonia – all over – working hard and treating this like the true sport that it is."
The PCS Sula Open will serve as an Elite Series event on the DGPT schedule, providing a points opportunity for European pros to gain recognition and compete against top players from around the world.
"Bringing a points opportunity to Europe has always been a goal," Spring said. "We want to make it easier for our growing ranks of European pros to gain points on the DGPT and encourage more travel to the US in the future."
As the disc golf world prepares for this historic event, fans can expect an unforgettable experience that combines competitive disc golf with a unique cultural exchange.
"It's going to be a can't-miss event," Barsby predicted. "The whole community will get to see what we have to offer – from the hospitality to the views and the talent pool."
And when the competition concludes on Saturday, players and spectators alike will gather for the well-known player's party, celebrating the completion of the tournament.
"It's a true Nordic experience," said Barsby. "We can't wait to share it with everyone."
