Disc Golf Pioneer Michelle Jones Writes Children's Book to Grow the Sport
Date Published
Michelle Jones, 2013 Advanced Masters Women World Champion in disc golf, took an unconventional approach to growing the sport – she wrote a children's book. Gracie and the Marvelous Metal Basket, published in 2017, introduces young readers to the world of disc golf through a story about a curious girl named Gracie who discovers a mysterious metal basket in the park.
Jones' inspiration for writing the book came from her desire to make disc golf more accessible and fun for kids. She drew on her own experiences as an amateur player and incorporated playful rhyme and humor into the story. The main character, Gracie, is modeled after Jones' granddaughter Jennifer Grace, and the book features a unique blend of Dr. Seuss-style rhymes and adult-oriented humor.
Jones began writing the book in 2014 but faced challenges along the way. She had to put her work aside when she moved to Florida with her husband Clay, who has been instrumental in supporting her creative endeavors. With his encouragement, Jones persevered and eventually completed the book.
As an Innova Ambassador, Jones has become a prominent figure in the disc golf community. She and her husband run tournaments and volunteer for programs aimed at introducing children and families to the sport. They've even incorporated disc golf into the Junior Olympics program in Macon, Georgia. In addition to her literary pursuits, Jones currently serves as Events Coordinator for the Gainesville Chain Hawks in Florida, where she and Clay are building a private 18-hole course on their property.
Jones hopes to write more books featuring characters inspired by each of her grandchildren. She credits her husband's support and guidance for helping her bring Gracie and the Marvelous Metal Basket to life. The book is available now via Amazon in both digital and paperback formats, offering a unique introduction to disc golf for young readers.
