Disc Golf Field Day Ignites Passion in Physical Educators

Date Published

On October 23, 2009, Western Carolina University played host to a disc golf workshop funded by an innovation grant from the Professional Disc Golf Association. Twenty-two physical education teachers from western North Carolina gathered for a day of fun, fitness, and education. The goal was to introduce these educators to the health benefits, sportsmanship values, and environmental aspects of disc golf, as well as provide them with the necessary skills to teach the sport.

Despite the growing popularity of disc golf in their region, many of the teachers had little experience with the game. However, this lack of familiarity only fueled their enthusiasm and friendly competitiveness. Dr. Chris "CTP" Tuten, a skilled player, wowed the group with his impressive mid-range shots and sharp putting skills. The participants eagerly observed his demonstrations, asking thoughtful questions about stance, grip, and release.

Throughout the day, the teachers engaged in various modified games, including putting contests and ring-of-fire challenges. These activities not only promoted physical activity but also encouraged teamwork and sportsmanship. As the workshop progressed, the participants played Disc-Lacrosse, a game featured in the "Getting the EDGE" curriculum, which added an aerobic component to the fun.

The natural beauty of Western Carolina University's disc golf course was a major draw for the participants, who were impressed by its unique challenges and scenic views. Those familiar with traditional ball golf found it easy to grasp the basic rules and strategies of disc golf. The women's foursome, in particular, showed remarkable enthusiasm and competitiveness, with one participant exclaiming, "Hey, I pared that hole! This is great!"

The post-workshop evaluation feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with comments like "the disc course was a blast" and "I am definitely using this stuff." Just 72 hours after the workshop, a local physical education program in Asheville, North Carolina, purchased an EDGE package and discs.

This project served as a unique opportunity for collaboration between Western Carolina University and local schools. By equipping physical educators with the fundamentals of disc golf, we hope to inspire more young people to explore this exciting sport and its community resources. As one participant noted, "once turned on" to disc golf, people simply fall in love with it. We extend our gratitude to the PDGA and David Shope from INNOVA/EDGE for their support.
