Delaware Prepares to Host Prestigious USWDGC Women's Disc Golf Championship

Date Published

Delaware, Ohio, is abuzz with excitement as it prepares to host the prestigious United States Women's Disc Golf Championships (USWDGC). The event, which has been running for over a decade, attracts some of the world's top female disc golfers, all vying for the coveted title. For three days, starting from September 19th, the city will be transformed into a hub of energy and competition as the best women in the sport gather to test their skills.

The championship will take place on two courses: the Gordon Holton Memorial DGC and The Player's Course @ Alum Creek Park. Both courses offer a unique challenge for players of all skill levels, with a mix of tight wooded holes, water hazards, OB (out of bounds), and mandos that demand precision and strategy.

Gordon Holton Memorial DGC will feature 18 permanent holes and seven temporary holes, providing an abundance of challenges for the players. The course is designed to favor accuracy over brute force, making it a true test of skill. Players will have to navigate through tight fairways, carefully place their drives, and execute precise approaches to secure pars.

On the other hand, Alum Creek Park offers a more forgiving layout, perfect for those who prefer a quicker round. The course has a mix of wooded holes, open fields, and water hazards that require players to think strategically and adapt to changing conditions. As one of the courses will be played twice on Saturday, players will have to be prepared to perform under pressure.

The USWDGC has a rich history, having been run by different organizers over the years. The event was initially held in Rock Hill, South Carolina, before being taken over by Bill "Old Man" and Mary Ann "Mom" Wallis, who ran it for six years from Peoria, Illinois. Today, the championship is awarded through a bidding process each year, making it one of the most prestigious events in women's disc golf.

As the players prepare to take on the challenging courses, fans can follow live scoring and updates on pdgalive.com. Prodigy Disc will provide daily video coverage of the Open Women's lead card, while pdgalive.com will offer comprehensive coverage, including pictures, videos, and tweets from @pdgalive and @pdga.

The stage is set for an exciting weekend in Delaware, Ohio, as some of the world's top female disc golfers battle it out for the title. With live scoring, video coverage, and on-site updates, fans will be able to experience all the action firsthand. The 2015 USWDGC promises to be an unforgettable event that showcases the skills and determination of these exceptional athletes.

Welcome to Delaware…Ohio!

That’s right folks, the 2015 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships (USWDGC) takes place in none other than Delaware, OH. Or, as the locals refer to it, “Mid-Ohio”. Regardless of what you call it, this area is home to some amazing disc golf courses, two of which are being played by the USWDGC field this weekend.

Gordon Holton Memorial DGC

The featured course for the weekend, Gordon Holton, will provide an abundance of challenges for women of all skill levels. The course consists of 18 permanent holes and an additional seven temporary holes that combined make for a dangerous but manageable mixture of every type of throw in disc golf. The landscape of the course, despite having a few long longer holes, doesn't accommodate big arm players unless they can follow their distance drives with extremely precise approaches.

Gordon Holton will be played once for Round 1 tomorrow and one more time for the final round on Sunday (Round 4). Depending on which division you’re following along with, the layout being played can be very different. The course par ranges from 58 to 88 based on which division and which layout the women are up against.

The Player’s Course @ Alum Creek Park

Alum Creek is one of those courses that you wish you could play every single day. It’s the perfect course for a quick round after a long day of work from the shorts, and a challenging course for a tag round between you and your friends playing from the longs. Much like Gordon Holton, the course has a mixture of tight wooded holes combined with water hazards, OB, and mandos that make you re-think your initial plan as you walk up to the tee.

Alum Creek Park will be played twice on Saturday, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. It’s a one day opportunity to make or break your position going into the final round on Sunday morning.

History

The 2015 USWDGC Players Guide does a great job of explaining a bit of the history behind the event.

"Starting out of Rock Hill, SC for the first three years, the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships was then taken over by Bill “Old Man” and Mary Ann “Mom” Wallis. Making the USWDGC what it is today, Old Man and Mom ran the tournament for six years out of Peoria, IL. This event, now awarded through a bidding process each year, has become the premier event for women in the sport. We’re excited and honored to have the Wallis family join our team this year along with the PDGA as your hosts for 2015!"
