Sean Jack is a name synonymous with excellence in the world of professional disc golf. As the tournament director of the OTB Open presented by MVP Discs Sports, Sean has played a pivotal role in shaping the event into one of the most anticipated tournaments on the Disc Golf Pro Tour schedule. With his passion for the sport and expertise as a tournament director, we sat down with Sean to explore his story, share insights on what it takes to be a successful TD, and give fans a glimpse into what makes the OTB Open truly special.

Sean's love affair with disc golf began in 2008 while trail running at Borderland State Park. The distinctive sound of chains caught his attention, and he was immediately hooked. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey that would see Sean become a respected figure in the disc golf community. As we delved into his story, it became clear that Sean's dedication to the sport and its events has been driven by a desire to share the joy of disc golf with others.

Sean's first foray into tournament directing was at the 2012 San Francisco Safari. With the event facing cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, Sean stepped in to ensure its continuation. This experience taught him an invaluable lesson: that asking for help is not only acceptable but essential when hosting a successful event. As he reflects on his journey, Sean emphasizes the importance of building relationships with organizations and individuals who can provide valuable resources and expertise.

As the tournament director of the OTB Open, Sean's top priority is to create a seamless experience for players and spectators alike. He achieves this by identifying areas where additional support is needed and surrounding himself with a talented team of experts. His business partner and co-TD, Shawn Mercy, brings an impressive skillset as an engineer/master project manager, ensuring that every detail, no matter how small, receives meticulous attention.

For those new to tournament directing, Sean offers sage advice: shadowing an experienced TD is an essential step in learning the ropes. This hands-on approach not only provides valuable insight but also allows aspiring directors to develop their skills and build confidence. When it comes to hosting a successful event, Sean stresses that trying to do everything oneself can be detrimental; instead, he advocates for embracing the value of teamwork and collaboration.

The OTB Open has undergone significant growth since its inception as the SFO in San Francisco. In 2021, due to concerns surrounding COVID-19, the tournament was relocated to Stockton. To everyone's surprise, the new location proved to be a stroke of genius, with the city, local travel council, and community coming together to create an unforgettable experience for players and fans.

What sets the OTB Open apart from other tournaments is its unique blend of professionalism and camaraderie. Sean credits this to his talented team, which shares his passion for creating an exceptional spectator experience. For the 2022 OTB Open, fans can expect even more excitement as the event continues to push boundaries in terms of entertainment value.
