Aland Islands Disc Golf Heaven Unveils its Finest Hour

The stunning Åland Islands have long been hailed as a paradise for disc golf enthusiasts, and the current PDGA Euro Tour stop is living up to the hype in every way. Situated between Sweden and Finland, this enchanting archipelago has lured top pros like Eagle McMahon, Niklas Antilla, and Hjalte Jensen to its breathtaking courses.

The competition is fierce, with MPO leader Hjalte Jensen sitting at the top of the leaderboard after a scorching -10 round. However, Eagle McMahon is hot on his heels, having caught up with an impressive -10 through 14 holes, including a thrilling tap-in eagle on the 400m hole 11.

But it's not just the pros who are making waves – Finnish disc golf sensation Miro Ryhänen has taken second place alongside McMahon and Scott Stokely, tying for a spot on the lead card for round two. Meanwhile, Czech superstar Jakub Semerád trails closely behind with an impressive 8-under score.

In the women's division, Finnish favorite Heidi Laine continues to dominate, taking first place in the PDGA Euro Tour – Åland Open 2023 presented by Discmania with a stunning 5-under score. Silva Saarinen is hot on her heels, sitting in second place at three strokes back.

As the competition heats up, the picturesque Aland Islands are showing off their unique charm and rich disc golf history. The archipelago has become a hub for innovation, with entrepreneurs like Mats Adamczak spearheading the development of 16 courses across the islands – one per municipality. This vision aims to draw in tourists from neighboring countries and revitalize the local economy.

The story behind this remarkable growth is fascinating. From its humble beginnings as a single nine-hole pitch and putt course in Vesterkalmare, the Aland Disc Golf Island has evolved into a thriving disc golf destination. With the relaunch of the European Open in 2022, the islands have become a magnet for top pros and enthusiasts alike.

As the Åland Open 2023 unfolds, we're witnessing not only an incredible display of disc golf talent but also the growth and charm of this enchanting archipelago. As one local disc golfer so aptly put it: "This is the Magic of Disc Golf."
